Slavery

Oscar Wilde once said:

The fact is, that civilisation requires slaves. The Greeks were quite right there. Unless there are slaves to do the ugly, horrible, uninteresting work, culture and contemplation become almost impossible.

One might consider that the days of slavery, with slaves being whipped, hanged or tortured are begone with the Dark Ages. However, a new form of slavery is on the rise - corporate slavery. No matter how fancy your designation is, the world can be divided into two clear-cut 'classes'. Like we had 'the haves' and the 'have-nots', we now can divide society into 'the slaves' and 'the slave-nots'.

The urban dictionary defines 'corporate slavery' as:

The people who make the business world go round and round, without them executives might actually have to do something besides make rules to make it more difficult for the slaves under them to do their job. Corporate slaves are easily identifiable by the vacant look in their eyes as they are always overworked, underpaid and underappreciated.

That actually sounds a lot like my job description. What do you think; does this seem like what you do all the time?

Sorry, I have a great boss and I work for a great organization. The rules are reasonable - I find some of my fellow workers do their best to get something for nothing, taking advantage of sick leave, and often feel like they are taken advantage of because our employer actually expects 8 hours work for 8 hours of pay. A few of these folks should probably be fired.
On the other hand if you work for a totalitarian boss - start looking for another job - they don't deserve you.

That's great to hear, Grayquill. :)

Yes, I do have a totalitarian boss, and in the last 3 months, I've had no weekends, and less than 2 days off (in which I had to travel for over a 1000 km).

So, a job hunt is on the cards. :D

What we do to counter that in our organization is define a clear set of norms and boundaries that ensure empowerment and bring about a sense of ownership, all of which operate in the framework of a reasonable sense of freedom!

But having said that, expectations are always two-sided and need to be equitable, reasonable, logical and permissible for personal freedom!
