Pay it Forward

My blogger friend Scriber, comes up with some really awesome concepts. She is super talented and has a rocking sense of humour too.

One of her ideas I loved is the idea of ’paying it forward’. In her own words, here are the rules:

  • I make a handmade gift for the first three interested people who leave a comment on this post.
  • I have 365 days in which to do it. What it will be and when it will arrive is a total surprise!
  • The catch is that you must participate as well: you must have a blog and continue to pay it forward. Write a post on your blog about paying it forward and invite your readers to participate. Keep the fun going.
  • Anyone who is interested in receiving a hand made gift from me must provide a shipping address to me in an email.

Now, I’ll not pretend to be extraordinarily creative and say that I’ll make you the moon and the stars. But I shall be diligent and sincere and do the best I can.

I had read Scriber’s post about paying it forward earlier too, but was not quite sure of whether I’d be able to do it or not. However, I’ll give it a shot.

Are you game? :)

Edit: I would recommend that you be circumspect with giving out your address to an absolute stranger. Thanks for the observation, Megha.

Hey Sum,
Sounds like an interesting concept..
reminds me of the times when we used to have pen pals and we used to write long airmails & gifts across continents..
Gives me a chance to recreate again!!!!
I'm game.
Gonna link this article to my post
Thanks Scriber for reviving this one, albeit in a fresher format ^~^

What if I see you at my doorstep ?

@Anu... thank you for taking up the offer. Bribe? :O For what?

@Megha... damn! You saw through my scheme. But yes, that is a realistic concern, and quite honestly, I don't recommend that you give out your address to someone who you don't know. (That's me in this case.)

Just kidding ;)

well, it's noble thought :)

Megha, actually it's a genuine concern that you have.

Sounds like an interesting concept... reminds me of schooldays... or even X-mas time, when gifts are exchanged (secret Santa)

btw... good to see you blogging regularly... after the rather long period of hibernation!

Awww.... Sauron, you are too kind to me! Actually this is not my original idea. But I liked it a lot and used it giving the due credit.

I totally agree about giving your address to complete strangers. Don't. But typically, the first three people who respond are ones you may already have a friendship with. At least that's how it worked for me, Janice, and Mythos.

There are alternatives for giving your personal address too. You can get a PO box or send your work or college address. But chances are that you already have a bloggy friendship with them.

Also, as far as hand made things go, there are many options. You can paint, draw, do beading etc. And it does not have to be fantastic. Just whatever you can do.

I am going to start working on my gifts this weekend. Once I am done, I will need an address to ship it to. I'll send you an email at that point.

PS: You'll also find out my real name. People finding out my real name scares me more than giving away my address... LOL...

sorry this is long!

@Scriber... You can actually have an assumed name too. :P But yeah, nice folks on the net could be nasty stalkers in real life, so it is best to be circumspect. And I don't really grudge anyone not trusting me enough to share their contact info. I think that makes a lot of sense. :)

But Sumit I do trust you. I invited you to Austin to come hang out. Remember?
It is never OK to give out your name and address to just some random people. But I've been visiting your blog for almost an year and have a sense of who you really are. Same with other folks I shared my address with.
Also, it is a good idea to blog under an alias if you have a career. When you interview for a job etc. or even when you are employed, people google search your real name. I am a hiring manager and I do google searches on anyone I am interested in interviewing. You really don't want prospective employers to read your blog about stupid stuff you do:) Generally it is just a good idea to keep your blogging and career identity separate. Unless of course you are blogging about your subject matter expertise. For example, I have numerous friends who blog under real names but they blog about techniques of technical writing, tools, challenges, etc. So that is a good thing for your career.

Sorry to be so chatty! It is Friday!

@Scriber... I'm glad you trust me, and my comment was a general take on how bad things can be in the virtual world.

And yes, I understand the risks of blogging under a real name. I switched to using a real name instead of the 'Sauron' I used earlier, because I'll be blogging about my core area - HR under the same name too. Managing multiple accounts would've been too painful, so I decided to take the lazy way out. :P

Please be as chatty as you can... after all, it's the weekend. :D

Anything for the people who leave the last 3 comments? You don't even have to ship mine. U can deliver it yourself. :P how does that sound?

@Architha... I shall consider your request... :D
